Milk Jugs Turn a Playground ‘Green’ in Portland
More than 200 volunteers from The Home Depot, Human Solutions Inc. and KaBOOM! built an eco-friendly playground in Portland, Ore. this summer.
The project is one of three playgrounds we’re building this year that incorporates innovative equipment and side projects that are environmentally friendly.
The new play area features decking comprised of 100-percent recycled milk jugs. The posts for the playground are made with 80-percent post-consumer recycled content. A rainwater collection system, dog run and community garden were also installed.
The playground will provide a safe, fun environment for the children in the community. The site selected for the playground is named Arbor Glen, which is one of 14 affordable housing complexes in the region. This low-income site has undergone significant rehabilitation and was in desperate need of a playground.
The project was funded through a $61,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation, along with a $7,500 contribution from Human Solutions.
In 2009, The Home Depot became the official Sustainability Partner of KaBOOM! We are working together to make sure each playground project is as environmentally friendly as possible, in addition to educating children and communities about this important issue.

I had a wonderful experience with this project. I am glad that we can come together for the community.
In an environment like we live in now, where so many corporations are elminating programs, I’m so thankful to work for a company that cares about giving back to the community. I look forward to working on the next KaBOOM project in my area…
What an experience! Over 200 people working together and having fun. One of the residents, Amber, put on an orange shirt and worked her little heart out all day! Seeing the joy on the faces of the kids was worth every minute of hard work.
Right on! Good Job Volunteers on creating another eco-friendly playground. I’ve never heard of decking made of 100% recycled milk jugs, but that sounds awesome! Way to go for the entire community.
I have worked for a Kaboom project here in Tucson, AZ and the way that the kids faces light up to see there new playground is worth the sunburn and sore muscles
