Teamwork Pays Off in Raleigh

Raleigh Mayor honors Home DepotThe Mayor of Raleigh, N.C., recognized Home Depot District 323 at a council meeting this month. More than 130 Team Depot volunteers had worked together this fall to transform Lane Street Park in Raleigh. Clay Councill, Team Depot captain for District 323 and Store Manager of Home Depot Store 3615 in Cary, accepted a plaque from Mayor Charles Meeker.

Raleigh PlaygroundAssociates from The Home Depot, their District Manager Joe Verdicchio and their Regional Vice President Hadyn Chilcott partnered with KaBOOM!, workers from the City Parks Department, students from St. Augustine College and dozens of community members on this project. At the morning kickoff there were just basketball courts and tall oak trees on the site. By our traditional Home Depot board-cutting at the end of the day, the volunteers had constructed a new playground, transformed the green space, and made an immeasurable impact on the community.

The team on this project completed the following:

  • Assembled a new play structure complete with two slides, two climbing elements and 6 swings
  • Built a wooden pressure treated retaining wall around the play area
  • Moved 115 square yards of mulch surfacing onto the play space
  • Assembled 4 park benches and 2 picnic tables
  • Mixed more than 260 bags of concrete
  • Installed 300 feet of new chain link fence around the basketball court
  • Planted more than 1000 pieces of decorative grasses and 150 different shrubs and bushes
  • Built a 50 ft block retaining wall at one end of the courts
  • Moved more than 40 yards of rock and topsoil to backfill around the plants and walls
  • Constructed cubbies and added a fresh coat of paint at the community center

Raleigh PlaygroundThe community was joined by Mayor Pro Tem, Dr. West, who spoke at the board cutting; Lee Slade from Senator Kay Hagan’s office helped mix concrete; and Betty Jo Shepheard from Senator Richard Burr’s office helped serve lunch to the volunteers, with help from staffers in Congressman Brad Miller’s office.

“Thanks to everyone for their support and help with this great project,” said Jennifer Perritte, Community Affairs Manager for Home Depot’s Southern Division. “Ultimately we were thrilled to share our time and efforts in helping our community become a little bit better today.”

I just want to say, “I can’t wait to get involved in these projects!” I’ve always wanted to be part of a company that was hands-on involved in their community and now I am. I couldn’t be more excited about working for a company. God bless all of you, employees at THD, who GIVE YOUR TIME and MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Company Core values only go as far as the lips of those who preach them. Don’t buy into it. I’ve learned first hand, that the company could not careless about “giving back to the community”, nor could they care about those who work for them.

My it’s wonderful to see so many helpful people working together, it does my heart good. To think my nephews will be able to enjoy the hard efforts of volenteers like yourselves. What a JOY indeed. It is better to ‘give’ than it is to ‘recieve’. Thanks so for GIVING”

The Home Depot does care about it’s community! I’m sorry J Smith had a bad experience but he shouldn’t feel that all of Home Depot is the same.
