Home Depot Legend: Cathy and Darren – Anaheim, California
Our latest Home Depot Legends took on a heartwarming DIY job for one of our canine friends at Store 6643 in Anaheim, Calif. The project began when a customer explained to Lead Generator Cathy Thomas that she had an unusual request.
The customer’s brother owns a rescue shelter for dachshunds, and a poor little pup named Chica was paralyzed. The customer wanted to build a wheelchair that would prevent Chica from hurting herself when she dragged her back legs and also make it easier to get her adopted. It would be too costly to purchase a wheelchair, as they range from $400 to $1,000.
Cathy and the customer tried to design a chair using PVC pipe and wheels, but it seemed too bulky. Cathy brought Pro Department Supervisor Darren Ralston into the brainstorming, and he knew just what to do. Darren downloaded photos and diagrams of dog wheelchairs on the Internet and then put his own spin on the project.
“Most of the designs involved PVC, but I thought it would be too rickety. It needed to last, so I decided to make it out of metal,” Darren said.
Darren headed down the Hardware aisle and gathered aluminum flat bar and tubing, then cut and bent it to shape. Darren used long bolts to connect lawn mower wheels to the frame and attached Velcro for the strap. A coat of pink paint and four hours later, Chica’s custom ride was ready to roll.
“When the customer came back in to pick up the wheelchair, she brought Chica and the owners of the shelter. We strapped Chica in, and within minutes she was running all over Tool Rental,” Darren said.
After many hugs and more than a few tears, the customers headed out, with Chica trotting at their side.

I think you guys are wonderful people. We own a 5lb poodle who is disabled and needs a wheelchair. We have been saving for months and still can’t afford one for him due to his size it has to be a custom one. So as the owner of one of these pets I know how much it is appreciated and I know how much Chica is enjoying the freedom to run and play again. God bless each of you for your kindness, love and effort.
An example of what happens when the right people get together to solve a problem. Great job!!!
